After the disappointment of having to cancel the 2023 event owing to strong winds and heavy rain, Christchurch’s popular smooth Jazz festival returns to the Quomps on Saturday 3 August.
The organisers have arranged an exciting and varied six band programme that kicks off at 12 noon and runs through till 10pm. There will be the usual bars, food stalls, children’s rides and great music!
The event is free but on-the-day donations will be sought and there will be at least one raffle. Stompin’ 2024 is financially supported by Christchurch BID.
The music programme kicks off at 12 noon and features the following bands:
12noon The Sound of Blue Note
Straight Ahead, hard driving, tight-knit Blue Note Jazz from this accomplished five piece.
1.30pm The Boogie Bumpers
Jump Jive – This seven piece band fuse Jazz swing, rhythm and blues and a bit of rock ‘n roll. Rollicking good fun!
3pm Soldoro
Brazilian/Latin Jazz from this exciting six piece. Expect tunes from Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stevie Wonder and much more.
4.30pm FNUK
Jazz Rock/Jazz Fusion a la Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Brecker Brothers. The band includes local legends Jeremy Stacey (Drums) and Paul Stacey (guitar) who have worked will Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Robbie Williams, The Black Crowes, Noel Gallagher and King Crimson amongst others, and also includes Yolanda Charles on Bass (Mick Jagger, Paul Weller, Squeeze and the Waterboys).
6pm The Kim Cypher Band
The funkier side of Jazz from this exuberant and passionate saxist and her band. Kim opened Stompin’ in 2019 and had the crowd on their feet. Candy Dulfer meets touches of raunchy Blues and 1940s swing.
7.45 The Taverners Big Band with Sam Merrick
The Band that started Stompin’ and always ends the event. They feature Big Band versions of contemporary classics from James Bond tunes to Weather Report plus timeless favourites from Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Benny Goodman. Showstopping. With guest vocalist Sam Merrick.
