With a packed programme of family-centred Easter holiday activities the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson invites visitors to discoverwhat life was around the turn of the 19th century, when French emperor Napoleon’s ambitions threatened invasion and war in Europe.
Fort Nelson’s Napoleonic activities are designed to entertain and enlighten all ages. Children can pretend to be soldiers and practice drill formations under the command of our drill sergeant. Then the young recruits can test their skills firing flintlock muskets andcannons in a shooting range, and have-a-go at traditional games of the period.
For a real insight into the artillery on display at the museum visitors can join one of our fact-packed 30-minute guided tours. History is also brought to life in the Guard Room, where a Napoleonic battlefield surgeon will describe and demonstrate the implements he used to treat the wounded.
There will be also be insightful talks on the battle of Waterloo by costumed characters throughout the day and the opportunity to handle historical artefacts.
As well as all the Easter fun Fort Nelson is a great place to get some fresh air and have an adventure. This historic monument is set within 19 acres and features ramparts with stunning panoramic views, exciting tunnels to explore and plenty of space to run around. Indoors the restored barracks and museum galleries are full of treasures from the national collection of artillery with loads to discover.
Enjoy drinks, snacks and meals throughout the day in Cafe 1871 and or outside on the pleasant terrace.
Fort Nelson will be open from 10am to 5pm during the Easter holidays (6 April – 21 April) and museum admission is free. Parking is £3.
