Review: Period Menstrual Cups

Becoming a mum is an overwhelming experience, so many new lessons and changes. Some changes happen to a woman’s body and areas such as your menstrual cycle may change forever. Some periods become lighter, heavier and the typical symptoms that were their before increase in intensity.

Country Child had heard that a menstrual cup could help with the many period changes a woman faces after childbirth., so we challenged some mums to try and test Menstrual Cups and tell us what they thought.

Saalt Menstural Cup

Wanting to do my bit when it comes to the environment, I've been keen to try out a Menstrual Cup. I tested the Saalt range.

It was initially a bit daunting when I opened up the box, seeing the item for the first time. However after reading the instructions, I was able to work out how this funnel shape object was meant to be used. My first try didn't go well but that's because it was a new feeling but mainly my fears stemmed from the thought that my body would somehow consume this object and I'd never see it again! Once my irrational fear was put to bed by me reading article after article on how this is physically possible, I relaxed and actually the cup is very comfortable.

The next bit that I thought would be another concern was the removal. Again, my fears here were around what the chances were of it spilling everywhere, and what if I can't release the suction? I would recommend reading the instructions again on your first try. And no, the 'small tail' is not just like a tampon string, you can't just pull that. To release the suction you need to pinch the bottom of the cup and then pull down. It was a relief that this was not messy, as I originally thought. Once you have emptied the cup you just need to rinse and then repeat.

My overall view on the menstrual cup is good and I don't think I will turn back. It's comfortable, greener and cheaper. Win win all round.

Floweret Cup

I recently discovered menstrual cups as I was fed up with the cost of period care for myself and my now teenage daughter. I have continuously used Floweret design and product range.

As a single parent juggling the pennies is paramount and the saving for me when providing for both ladies in our household was extremely beneficial.

Aged 42. I am now not as heavy as I was but I wish I had made the change earlier in my life. The cups are comfortable, easy to insert and the fact I can go to work safe in the knowledge that leaking is reduced if not eradicated, is a worry I no longer have.

My daughter, aged 17, is as you would expect a teenager to be, heavier in her cycle and also finds it a breath of fresh air. I am so pleased she has embraced this fairly new concept. She is hugely happy that they are also an economically friendly option too.
